What is the name of the celtic symbol of trust and where can i find a picture of it?

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2010 and filed under celtic symbol | 2 Comments »

The Celts themselves left very little in the way of records, and most symbols are interpreted by archaeologists and other scholars who study the symbols in context. Some ancient Celtic symbols have changed in meaning over time, having been influenced by the introduction of Christianity and the influence of other cultures.

A general rule of thumb is: the shape of the design often determines the "meaning" of a knotwork design- triskele and trefoil shapes should be regarded as triskeles, bird, fish, and animal designs represent the attributes of the animal, etc. Circles represent unity or eternity, spirals reincarnation or cycles of life and rebirth, triangles and trefoils the threefold dominions of earth, sea, and sky. Squares or four-fold shapes are shield knots, symbols of protection from spirits or malevolent influence. Interlaced animals and men usually represent relationships, or emphasize the interdependence of mankind and nature.

I am thinking of getting a tattoo and I need to get some ideas. My sister has this cool one that represents tranquility. I just got out of rehab about 18 months ago and have been clean since. Im looking for some symbols (Celtic, Ancient, Japanese, Indian, American, etc.) that would represent freedom. I am a college graduate and I am not stupid, please try to help me!!

Any species of bird is common, typically because it represents the freedom of being trapped in a cage.

Where can I find a knitting pattern with celtic knot work?

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2010 and filed under celtic crosses | 4 Comments »

I’m looking for a pattern using celtic knot work in cables. I would like to find something other than the basic celtic cable, and after a few days of searching, I’m not finding anything more intricate. I would like to make a blanket, with either interlocking knot work, or something in which I can have a repeating pattern of the trinity knot or a celtic cross. I dunno something other than the basic celtic cable. Thank-you for your time and help.

Here’s one with an 8-stranded braid that should be a challenge for anyone: http://ittakesballstoknit.com/?p=530

If you haven’t met Janet Szabo, the "queen of cables," you might enjoy her web site and her books: http://www.bigskyknitting.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=BSK

This one http://www.interweavestore.com/Knitting/Patterns/Celtic-Tote.html?a=ke100324 is a $5.50 download that you can adapt for a blanket. It certainly seems to fit your description.

Celtic Tatoo Designs?

My boyfriend is Irish and thinking of having a Celtic Tatoo arm band, any ideas.

There’s always the claddagh or just some knot work, a harp, shamrocks (of course) and the tree of life. If he wanted something different he could look into getting the New Grange design Incorporated into the band. I just don’t see the New Grange stuff much

facts about celtic art?

please let me know some , thanks so much if yous do :)

When we talk about Celtic art, we are generally referring to early medieval Irish and British art, which exhibited certain ornamental characteristics. The term can refer to artistic objects produced by Celtic peoples elsewhere, as the site below indicates, but this material is hard to characterize as representing one type of art with specific and limited features.

On the site, scroll down to "Early Middle Ages" and focus on Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. Be sure to click on the link to "Insular Art."

The Celtic cross pre dates Christianity.
The equal armed or elemental cross represents the Earth or the physical realm.
The circle is a symbol of the heavens or the eternal world.
So the Celtic cross represents the union of Heaven and Earth, the physical and the eternal.
